Water-Wise Workshops

Creating a Water-Wise Landscape

Students will understand the process for removing or reducing existing turf, amending soil, creating hydrozones, adjusting irrigation, and planting and maintaining appropriate plants. Data relating to the effects of this historic drought and the importance of making wise decisions concerning landscape development and plant material will be shared along with a discussion of the 7-Steps to a Water-Wise Landscape.

Time:  5:30 – 7:00 p.m.

Location:  Downtown Center, Classroom #1 at Bitwise South Stadium (700 Van Ness Avenue, Fresno, CA 93721)

Instructor: Susan Stiltz is a Landscape Specialist for the City of Fresno’s Water Conservation Program and a private landscape designer and consultant specializing in water-wise, low-maintenance, sustainable gardens that are Central Valley Friendly.  She has a B.S. degree in Plant Science from Fresno State.  She was formerly with Tree Fresno and is a Certified Arborist and Master Gardener. She is the volunteer Garden Consultant for the Clovis Botanical Garden and is a board member for Fresno Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation.

Selection and Care of Water-Wise Plants

The instructor will share data relating to the effects of this historic drought and provide guidance on what plants will help you develop a water-wise landscape.  Making wise decisions about plant materials and learning how to maintain your water-wise plants will ensure you enjoy an attractive garden while conserving our precious water resources. Samples of water-wise plants will be available and a plant brochure will be provided.

Instructor: Leslie Feathers is a Landscape Specialist for the City of Fresno’s Water Conservation Program. An avid gardener for more than 25 years, she has a B.S. in Plant Science from Fresno State, is a Certified Arborist, and was formerly with Tree Fresno and Manager of the UC Master Gardener program.

Your How-To Guide to Watering Your Landscape

Soils absorb and retain water differently due to a set of variables. Plants have different water needs for various reasons, and efficient irrigation systems rely on proper design, installation and maintenance. Students will determine which type of system will give the best results for a healthy landscape while conserving water resources.

Instructor: Marilyn Creel has been a City of Fresno Landscape Water Conservation Specialist for the last seven years. Prior to her current position, she spent extensive time in the irrigation industry as staff support at the Center for Irrigation Technology at Fresno State. She was a Fresno County Master Gardener for more then 20 years and was instrumental in developing the Master Gardener’s Garden of the Sun demonstration garden.
