The People-Plant Connection: Do You Need More Nature in Your Life?

Develop a deeper awareness of the importance of the natural world in our lives and how plants and nature are used to benefit our experiences. This course provides an introduction to therapeutic horticulture and how it is being used to benefit a variety of populations. Learn how plants are used to improve quality of life and individual experiences. As we become a more technology-based society, we tend to spend more time indoors, removed from the natural world. How does that affect us? What can we do to incorporate more nature into our work and living spaces and why should we?

Instructor: Calliope Correia has a bachelor’s degree in Plant Science with an emphasis in horticulture, a master of science in Interdisciplinary Studies (Plant Science and Rehabilitation Counseling) and a Certificate in Horticultural Therapy. She works in Agricultural Operations at Fresno State where she manages greenhouse and nursery crops.

This introduction to indoor and small space gardening will be a how-to class on creating natural spaces in living environments. Learn how to use plants indoors, including in inhospitable environments, and find out what plants need to grow outdoors in small spaces (patios, small gardens, etc.). Includes an overview of techniques and types of plants, pots, soil media, etc. for indoor, patio, and vegetable gardens.
