About the Program

The Criminology major is designed to prepare students for beginning professional work in criminal justice and to provide preparation for graduate work including law school. Criminology courses at the undergraduate level include integration of theoretical and applied materials of an interdisciplinary nature. The law enforcement option is designed for students interested in careers with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, or law enforcement careers within the private sector. An internship course is required in the law enforcement option.

Please Note: The South Valley Criminology–Law Enforcement program is a cohort driven program. The importance of staying with your admitted cohort is critical to your success in the program.

Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminology/Law Enforcement South Valley Cohort Program

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminology with an option in Law Enforcement is granted upon completion of a minimum of 120 units. Degree and general education requirements must be completed (See Degree in the General Catalog). A grade of “C” or higher is required for all courses to be counted towards the major (excluding CRIM 1 and 180I, as these are CR/NC grading only). The following curriculum consists of one (1) lower-division and 15 upper-division Criminology courses required for the major. In addition, students must complete three (3) upper-division courses in General Education (Areas, IB, IC and ID), one course in Multicultural/International (MI), and the upper-division writing skills (exam or course with a “W”). 

General Education, University, and some major and elective courses are subject to change. Low student enrollment may result in the postponement or cancellation of South Valley Cohort. Course instructional modes are subject to change per Chair or faculty of the Department of Criminology

Minimum Requirements

  • Admission to Fresno State as a transfer student
  • ADT in Administration of Justice is strongly recommended 
  • Completion of all prerequisite courses listed below with a ‘C’ grade or better 
  • A1 Oral Communication 
  • A2 Written Composition 
  • A3 Critical Thinking 
  • B4 Quantitative Reasoning 

 For South Valley Cohort, complete the following lower-division major requirements 

  • CRIM 2 
  • CRIM 20 
  • CRIM 50
