Health Insurance Requirement for International Students
UnitedHealthcare
As a condition of your enrollment at California State University, Fresno, you must purchase the approved insurance policy offered by UnitedHealthcare. This will satisfy the California State University health insurance requirement.
Note: You cannot register for classes until you purchase health insurance. In this case, a hold called "INTL Insurance Verification" will be placed on your student portal record, preventing enrollment. The hold will be removed within 1 to 3 business days of completing your health insurance purchase.

Health Insurance Requirements for F-1 Students
F-1 students are required to purchase the pre-approved policy offered by United Healthcare in order to satisfy the California State University insurance requirement.

Purchase UnitedHealthcare health insurance.
Registration Now Open
Fall 2026 (8/15/2026 - 12/31/2026): $752.50
Spring 2027 (01/01/2027 - 08/14/2027): $1,036.50
- The policy that you purchase will be issued by UnitedHealthcare.
- All the information you need regarding the policy can be found on the UnitedHealthcare website.
To Enroll
- Visit https://www.uhcsr.com/fresnostate
- Select the Explore Policy link under the Medical - Student Health Plan module
- Select the Get Started Link
- Select the Continue as Guest link
- Select the category you fall into, enter your U.S. zip code, click the check box, and then Next
- Select the Term, select Next
- Fill in the information required, select Next
- Enter your payment details
- Once payment is made successfully, expect a Welcome Email - follow the steps in the email to create your account
- Allow 2 business days after successful payment for your student account hold to be released
If you need assistance enrolling, contact United Healthcare at 1-800-767-0700 or email them at customerservice@uhcsr.com
Once you have created your account, you can find:
- Your profile, where you can update your mailing address
- A plan brochure outlining your benefits
- Information to download your ID card
- A link to find a doctor or clinic that accepts the UHC Choice PPO plan
After purchasing the insurance, you will be able to view and download your digital insurance ID card on the insurance start date or three weeks after enrollment, whichever is later.
If you need to see a doctor before this time, please contact the International Office by email at international@mail.fresnostate.edu. We will reach out to UnitedHealthcare to obtain the medical ID card information for you.
Refund Requests
- All refund requests must be sent to the University, which will confirm non-student status with Alliant and UHC and submit the refund request on behalf of the student.
- Only refunds submitted by the University before the refund deadline will be considered.
- All refunds will be processed back to the original form of payment only, no exceptions.
- Please allow 30 business days to receive and process the refund request, then an additional 3-5 business days to receive the refund from the financial institution. Pro-rated/partial refunds are not allowed.
Sponsored Students
Sponsored Students, under a qualifying sponsored insurance--including Fresno State employment benefit plans--may submit proof of alternate health insurance. Please review the Alternate Health Insurance Submission Form to confirm qualification requirements.
Insurance for F-2 Dependents
F-1 students are strongly advised to purchase insurance for F-2 dependents in the United States. While insurance for dependents is not available through UnitedHealthcare, dependents can be covered via private insurers
Vision and Dental plans
Please note that routine dental and vision coverage is not included in iSHIP, except as noted in the policy regarding dental services to prepare for radiation therapy of cancer in the head or neck and under the Pediatric Dental and Vision Services provision for insured persons under the age of 19.
- e.g. Breaking a tooth while eating is not covered
- e.g. Routine dental care and treatment to the gums are not covered
- e.g. Routine vision exams are not covered
