What Types of Courses Can Be Taught During Intersession?
Courses listed in the California State University, Fresno General Catalog may be offered during Intersession. Instructors are encouraged to offer General Education courses at the lower and upper division levels. Departments with high impact classes can take advantage of Intersession to offer additional sections. Please do not propose duplicate sections of the same course. Courses that require great amounts of writing or numerous lab hours may not fit into a condensed time frame.
Special Topics or elective courses allow faculty to offer a wide variety of course topics, current issues and share recent research. Be creative in your selection of class title and description so students will want to take part in your unique class.
At the direction of the faculty serving on the Writing Competency Subcommittee, UDWR courses must meet for a 6-week minimum. To comply, CGE will not accept W courses proposed for May-June Intersession.
Faculty members wishing to teach an Intersession class are requested to contact the department chair to discuss department needs. All Intersession course proposals must have the approval of the department chair and dean.
CGE encourages the submission of proposals for Intersession courses to be offered at the Visalia Campus location at the College of Sequoias.
Class Format and Contact Hours
May-June Intersession 2020 allows for 14 days of instruction, plus weekends if needed. Courses may be offered face-to-face, online or as a hybrid. The specific minimum numbers of contact hours required for a class are as follows:
- 1 unit of credit—15 contact hours (typically meets 3 hours per day for 5 days)
- 2 units of credit—30 contact hours (typically meets 3 hours per day for 10 day)
- 3 units of credit—45 contact hours (typically meets 3 hours per day for 14 days)
- 4 units of credit—60 contact hours (typically meets 4.5 hours per day for 14 days)
The University is closed May 25, 2020. No adjustment is necessary for campus closure on May 25.
May-June Intersession instructors must use the HERO ordering system to document required course materials and textbooks. Information must be submitted by the April 1, 2020. Contact the Kennel Bookstore Course Materials department at 559-278-4278 with any questions.
In an effort to conserve campus resources, classrooms may be limited to designated buildings, most likely the Music, Speech Arts and Education buildings. Faculty will be notified if the requested classroom or lab is not available.
Faculty members will be paid via the Division of Continuing and Global Education Salary Schedule, CSU Class Code 2322. Salary is based on faculty rank and class enrollment. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org for a salary schedule.
Faculty teaching courses through the Division of Continuing and Global Education must be in compliance with the 125% workload limit.
